Expanded’s direct delivery approach involves maintaining control over key project elements by leveraging in-house expertise and resources, such as our directly employed workforce, comprising a diverse range of skilled professionals, including engineers, designers, project managers, and construction specialists. By employing a significant portion of our workforce directly, we maintain greater control over quality, safety, and productivity across our projects. This approach ensures that the company can efficiently mobilise resources, retain expertise, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Additionally, having a directly employed workforce supports the company’s commitment to workforce development, training, and long-term career progression.

Our vertically integrated specialist businesses

Our approach includes self-performing critical construction activities and integrating design, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities ourselves, this includes Explore Manufacturing for concrete product manufacture, Crown House (CHt) for MEP offsite manufacture, onsite installation and systems integration, Select Plant for crane, plant and site accommodation solutions, and Explore Transport, for logistics management and transport. By doing so, we aim to enhance quality, reduce risks, optimise schedules, and deliver cost-effective solutions. The direct delivery model also supports innovation and ensures alignment with client objectives throughout the project lifecycle.

We have a wide-ranging in-house design and engineering function that includes temporary works design, geotechnical design and reinforcement design teams managed by highly qualified and experienced engineers. All our engineers are designers are highly diligent with proven capabilities.

Further engineering and design support is provided though access to our Materials Technology Centers (based in London and Manchester), our in-house specialist land surveying team, precast design, and digital engineering.

Design and engineering capabilities include:

  • Digital engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Facade Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering

Every organisation has an impact on the world around it. Being a responsible business means being transparent about what these are, measuring them accurately, and then acting to minimise them. As part of the Laing O'Rourke Group, we are committed to protecting the environment and helping people thrive.

We operate under independently verified management systems aligned to ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 50001 (Energy Management) and PAS 2080 (Carbon Management in Infrastructure). These frameworks allow us to identify and manage environmental risks and opportunities; reduce energy use and emissions on our sites and at our depots; and embed whole life carbon reduction into design, manufacture and delivery.

We apply mandated Minimum Requirements for Low Embodied Carbon Concrete and the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a fuel alternative to white diesel, delivering substantial reductions in Scope 1 and 3 emissions. Through the deployment of electric plant and equipment, supported by specialised battery energy storage systems (BESS) and telematic monitoring, we further reduce our fuel consumption, emissions, noise and air pollution while improving operational efficiency and performance visibility on site.

Expanded has set ambitious decarbonisation Science Based Targets to be achieved by 2030. We are aiming for a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 Emissions based on FY23 baseline data and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 taken from a FY23 baseline. This contributes to Laing O'Rourke Group-Wide target of being Net-Zero across Scope 1-3 emissions before 2050.

Expanded also recognise the importance of supporting the local communities around our projects. By working collaboratively with our clients and local stakeholders, we aim to create lasting positive social outcomes alongside delivery of our projects. In FY26 alone Expanded have delivered over £50million worth of Social Return on Investment through metrics such as Local and Inclusive Employment, Apprenticeships, and wider Community Investment through Donations and Volunteering.
