This was an extension to the existing south stand, creating an additional third tier which added an additional 6,250 seats, in conjunction with an additional three rows of pitch side seating, thereby creating 1,500 seats, and increasing stadium capacity to approximately 55,000. Construction commenced on the South Stand in April 2014 and was completed for the start of the 2015–16 season.
Construction of the new tier - including the roof, corporate suites and new seating involved 3,010 tonnes of steelwork as well as precast concrete terracing.
The complicated design of the extension required 32No large diameter piles to be installed in close proximity to the existing south stand wall. The position of these piles clashed with the existing roof overhang which had between 11.7m (at the lowest point and 17m at the highest point). The shortest mast of the Select fleet was on the Casagrande B180, at 20.12m. As a result, Expanded and Select sourced a Bauer BG24H low headroom model, which is the only one of its kind in the UK.
“Installing piles underneath the canopy of the existing stand was a real challenge and required the use of the UK’s first heavy-duty low-headroom piling rig. The presence of tension cables in the working area meant careful planning and close attention to detail were essential to complete the pile installation safely.”
