Expanded Piling was appointed as piling contractor for the Greenwich Peninsula development, working for L&Q alongside consulting engineer Walsh on a £3.1m scheme completed in July 2023.
This project highlighted the value of early contractor engagement. Early discussions allowed Expanded Piling to draw on its geotechnical experience in London, while also offering additional support across piling platform design, contaminated spoil management, and groundwater monitoring through sister company Select Ltd.
Works began in March 2023 with the removal of contaminated land, followed by installation of the piling platform designed by Expanded Piling’s in-house temporary works team. Contaminated spoil was managed in line with the Greenwich Peninsula Environmental Management Plan, while Select Ltd carried out groundwater testing and monitoring before, during and after the piling works.
Given the ground conditions, continuous flight auger piling was identified as the most suitable solution. The project required high-torque CFA rigs to install piles founded in Thanet Sand, with pile diameters of 450mm, 600mm and 900mm to depths of up to 32m.
The team mobilised two Casagrande B360XP piling rigs in April 2023, including the recently acquired hydraulic rig capable of installing CFA piles up to 36m deep, and successfully completed the project in July 2023
“This project allowed us to utilise our extensive knowledge of groundwork solutions with the installation of our own piling platform, before commencing the CFA piling scope, which included pile diameters ranging from 450 to 900mm. We took careful consideration of our social impact as we were working opposite the local secondary school, and surrounded by high rise residential buildings, and put measures in place to mitigate disruption.”
